Summer of the thirty-eighth doll

dempsey stewart at louis vuitton SS12/getty via daylife
Take a bow ladies - and gentlemen. Thirty-eight Australian models have just helped wrap up the Spring/Summer 2012 ready-to-wear runway season in New York, London, Milan and Paris - by frockwriter's estimate, a 35percent increase in numbers from the previous season. And what a season it has been, culminating over this past week in Paris, where the 18-strong Australian contingent included Miranda Kerr. No Balenciaga exclusive for Kerr, for the first time in four seasons. But after making her name as one of the world's highest-paid models, thanks to a lucrative contract with lingerie giant Victoria's Secret, how fantastic to see Kerr take her place alongside the world's top high fashion girls in a string of other blue chip brand shows, from Christian Dior to Lanvin and Chanel. Flanked by Abbey Lee Kershaw and Catherine McNeil, who is looking better than ever after a year's break from the shows, it was like the holy triumvirate of Australian modelling reunited. They were joined by Julia Nobis who walked in, wait for it, 72 shows, opening six. This may well make Nobis the busiest model - of any nationality - of the SS12 season by show numbers. Oddly, Nobis has yet to even be accorded a ranking on models.com's Top 50 Women list. One assumes this may soon change.
A few honorable mentions.

Rose Smith added a fourth consecutive Chanel show to her burgeoning portfolio - not bad, for someone who didn't even register on the international radar at the beginning of the year. At 41 shows, Smith's was the second-highest Australian show tally. She was closely tailed by Codie Young, Dempsey Stewart, Ruby Jean Wilson and Melissa Johannsen.

After booking the Chanel haute couture show in Paris in July, Caitlin Lomax bagged some very impressive names in her first fully-fledged show season, among them Prada, Miu Miu and Louis Vuitton.

But the dark horse award most definitely goes to Priscilla's Chrystal Copland, who entered the season without a shred of hype and walked in 21 shows across the four cities, quickly emerging as a casting director's favourite. Copland was accorded a prominent position in eight of these shows, closing four and opening four - including yesterday's Louis Vuitton show, one of the most prestigious gigs of the season (Kate Moss had closing honours).

See Copland (followed by Lomax, Wilson, Nobis and Stewart) in this video below, as the curtain rises on Louis Vuitton's spectacular circus carousel stage. The haunting musical score - in fact the theme from Dario Argento's 1977 slasher classic Suspiria - offered a subversive counterpoint to the sugared almond sweetness of the collection's broderie anglaise, cutwork lace and maribou feather-embellished confections. Copland is most definitely one to watch.

Congrats to all the models and agencies.

Below are the complete Spring/Summer 2012 Australian showlists and a photo gallery of the girls of Paris. The New York shows are in black type; London, blue; Milan, red; and Paris, in grey.

Interesting to see the 'Australian runway invasion' story take hold in the Australian media over the past month. The Daily Telegraph, The Sunday Telegraph and vogue.com.au were among numerous publications and websites to have picked the story up, with Grazia Australia devoting this week's cover story to the models' purported pay packets. With Australians on every top runway, it was difficult to ignore them.

What does Andrej Pejic have to do to make the cover of Vogue Australia?

gazelle paulo/freak chic

Andrej Pejic’s first modelling job was a cover shoot – for Oyster’s 77th edition, back in 2008, flanked by a phalanx of male and female models. And while many cover tries never make it to page one, one of Pejic’s Oyster shots did, together with two of the women. It’s fair to say, however, that very few in the Australian industry knew who he was at this time and he was by no means the sole focus of the story. Fast track to August 2011 and Pejic has appeared on no less than eight international magazine covers in the space of six months: Zeit Magazin (February), Photo (March), Dossier Journal (Spring 2011), Citizen K (Spring 2011), Carbon Copy (Spring 2011), L’Officiel Ukraine (June 2011), Follow #5 and just this week, the very high-profile New York magazine, as one of four covers of the magazine’s Fall 2011 fashion special. Here is a photo gallery of all nine covers (best viewed on the blog):

Debuting on models.com's Top 50 Men list at #40 in December, little wonder Pejic is now ranked the world number #19

So why haven’t Australian magazines been clamouring to get him on a cover back home? What an amazing coup it would be for Vogue Australia, for example, to be the first mainstream womens' fashion magazine in the world to do so, if only editor Kirstie Clements had the balls.

Given that even Miranda Kerr didn’t make it to the cover of Vogue Australia until January this year – until after she had appeared on the covers of both Spanish and Italian Vogue, had married Orlando Bloom and was pregnant – frockwriter thinks there’s little chance of that happening.

Speaking of pregnancies, one of the more amusing anecdotes recounted in the  accompanying Pejic feature in this month's New York magazine was how Pejic attempted a little supermodel satire when arriving at Sao Paulo airport in June this year, for Sao Paolo Fashion Week.

Inspired by the miraculous maternity bounce-backs of supermods such as Kerr, who somehow manage to head back to work mere weeks after giving birth, Pejic had hoped to demonstrate he could do it in a day: arriving in Sao Paulo with a styrofoam baby bump, which he planned to jettison for the following day’s runway duties.

Pejic’s plan was foiled by Brazilian customs which asked him to remove the object, assuming he might be smuggling contraband.

Once given the all clear, Pejic was reunited with his faux baby bump – and paraded it landside in this photo and video (above/below):

Flynn Bloom likes the limelight, Miranda Kerr thinks her drug-free labour was "a bit crazy"

celebkids.whyfame.com

Miranda Kerr is in town, as you know, spruiking David Jones. Below is a quick video chat backstage after last Wednesday’s runway show starring Kerr, in which she concedes that she found the prospect of doing the DJs' show in a swimsuit just seven months after giving birth “a little nerve-wracking” and confirms that she will be back on Victoria’s Secret runway later in the year. When asked what is the best thing about motherhood, Kerr notes “Everything, I just love it. There’s no word that could describe the joy and loveliness that it is to be a mother”. Undergoing a 27 hour labour without drugs may have given the supermod pause for some reflection however. She told frockwriter, “I was kind of a bit crazy not to but you know, I’d made my mind up and I’ll probably just see how I go next time”. As for Flynn, arguably the most overexposed baby on the planet right now, Kerr reveals that it’s a tough job trying not to give paps their money shots whenever she’s been out and about with Flynn in recent months. “You try your best to avoid it but it’s inevitable. And he was really into it. I tried to like, protect him but he comes around [flicks her head around, mimicking Flynn] because he likes the light”.

Rock on - David Jones Spring/Summer 2011/2012

Miranda Kerr has done rather a lot since she headed offshore to try her luck on the international fashion stage in 2005, like so many other eager Aussie hopefuls before her. The following year, after scoring a Maybelline contract, she landed what would evolve into a highly lucrative deal with US intimate apparel giant Victoria’s Secret. Kerr returned to the Australian market in 2008 in a big way as the new face of Australian department store David Jones, an astute marketing investment that is presumably costing DJs much less today than it is currently worth in media coverage. In the eighteen months since Kerr last walked DJs' biannual runway showcase, she has emerged as a truly global star – not just one of the world’s highest-paid models, but a household name whose every move is charted by the paps. Sure, the marriage to Hollywood heartthrob Orlando Bloom hasn’t hurt her profile, ditto the birth of their beautiful baby boy Flynn in January. So refreshing, then, to see Kerr backstage at DJ’s Spring/Summer 2011/2012 showcase on Wednesday night, hamming it up as just another one of the girls.

Frockwriter was backstage for the show’s duration and watched Kerr's antics with her old runway mates like Tiah Eckhardt, Stephanie Carta and Annika Kaban, as well as the crop of new girls who are rapidly rising up in Kerr and co's wakes (backstage portfolio of 73 shots, below - best viewed on the blog). Names such as Samantha Harris, Amanda Ware, Emily Wake – whose identical, non-model twin sister Elyse was standing backstage throughout the show, prompting more than one double take – and of course Rose Smith.

At last season’s DJs show in February, Smith had yet to work internationally. In the interim, she has been cast in no less than three Chanel shows (ready-to-wear, cruise and haute couture).

Another rising star on DJs runway: Claire Collins, whose modelling experience prior to July’s haute couture shows in Paris was one Australian fashion show. Collins was one of four Australian models booked by Chanel for its Fall/Winter 2011/2012 haute couture show, alongside Smith, Julia Nobis and another newcomer, Caitlin Lomax.

It might be the toughest Australian retail climate in half a century – with David Jones itself issuing a shock profit downgrade last month – but the runway and backstage vibe was upbeat. Setting the mood: some psychedelic, boho de luxe offerings from Sydney-based caftan queen Camilla Franks and Jets' sensational, colour-blocked swimwear. Shots of a pneumatic Kerr in Jets’ foxy collared maillot with plunging neckline were beamed across the world.

Also in the lineup: a few of DJs’ 60 fresh brand additions, including Lover, Carl Kapp and Ksubi’s new Kustom range of customised luxury denim pieces that are festooned with studs and graffiti - arguably the smartest business decision that the bad boys of Australian jeanswear have made in quite some time. The world’s economies are going to hell in a handbasket, but with luxury sales booming – and über efficient fast fashion powerhouses such as Zara giving consumers runway trends at killer prices - cash-cautious consumers, it seems, are more than happy to open their wallets for merchandise that they consider special.

A supermodel New Year

vogue paris june/july 2009 via style frizz

Some parts of the world might be winding down for the holidays but of course, fashion never sleeps. Frockwriter has it on good authority that Polish supermodel Anja Rubik (above)  – who is ranked as the world No 3 by models.com – will be winging her way downunder to shoot for Vogue Australia, in time for New Year’s Eve. With 11 international Vogue covers to her credit, six of them in 2010, one could only speculate that if Rubik was going to be featured anywhere in an upcoming edition of Vogue Australia, surely it would be the cover? If that’s the case, then good to see our Vogue finally shooting more of its own material, after many years of rehashing covers from international editions. Sure, plenty of other international and local titles do this, however all the publicity and accolades regarding Vogue Australia’s original covers over the past year, from Cate Blanchett to Abbey Lee Kershaw, Catherine McNeil and Miranda Kerr, can’t have hurt push the idea along. But we understand that Rubik might not be the only supermod in town over the New Year.

Iekeliene Stange arrived on Monday this week, to promote the Wish Autumn/Winter 2011 campaign that was just shot in New York with Sonny Vandevelde

McNeil is apparently already back home for Christmas. There is even a chance, we also hear, that Kershaw might either not be heading back to New York after this week’s Portmans shoot, or else may be returning.

If Kerr does indeed plan to have her baby downunder, as per speculation, she would most likely need to be getting back soon, given that she is due in January.

Kerr probably won’t feel much like partying on NYE but don’t count on the others not kicking their heels up. Especially the Next posse (Rubik, McNeil, Kershaw). We hear they may even be joined by a US celebrity...

Nicole Trunfio to officially replace Miranda Kerr as the face of David Jones' winter 2011 launch

vogue italia
In July, following the news that Miranda Kerr would be skipping David Jones’ Spring/Summer 2010/2011 runway showcase to enjoy her honeymoon with Orlando Bloom – amidst a deafening chorus of speculation she was three months pregnant – frockwriter predicted that Nicole Trunfio would replace Kerr as the face of the department store’s upcoming Autumn/Winter 2011 runway showcase and that Kerr would resume her official duties for the Spring/Summer launch in July 2011. So it’s official. Today’s Sunday Telegraph reports that Trunfio will “replace [Kerr] as the star of the David Jones Winter 2011 season”. Trunfio, who is also currently profiled in a video interview on the website of Vogue Italia, was flown by DJs to Sydney this week to shoot the winter catalogue.

vogue italia
Kerr will still have a minor role to play.

Fairfax's rival Sunday newspaper, The Sun Herald, today published an image of Kerr from David Jones' upcoming Autumn/Winter catalogue. The shot was recently taken in LA – with a 60 Minutes crew in tow, as anyone who saw that recent interview with Kerr would recall.

vogue australia via the sun herald

The Sun Herald also scored an interview with Kerr, who told the paper that she will feature in several images in the Autumn/Winter catalogue, but is “looking forward to coming back to support and work with DJs for the summer season and continuing in my role as fashion ambassador''.

The Sun Herald speculates that “one or more” of the models who filled in for Kerr in July in Sydney - Trunfio, Abbey Lee Kershaw, Alexandra Agoston and Catherine McNeil – will be gracing the retailer's runway in February.

As we now know, Trunfio will definitely be there. Agoston and McNeil may be two other contenders. We doubt very much, however, that Kershaw would avail herself for this show, given that its timing will coincide with the peak of the northern hemisphere Fall/Winter 2010/2011 runway season, during which Kershaw is always in huge demand.

Evidently, one paper scored the interview with Kerr and the other, the interview with Trunfio. And it looks like The Sunday Telegraph may have felt it got the short end of the stick.

In what reads as an extraordinarily bitchy comment, the paper notes that Trunfio “is taller, thinner and younger than pregnant Kerr”.

Elsewhere in today's edition, The Sunday Telegraph also reports that yet another nude image of pregnant Kerr will be published in the January 2010 issue of Vogue Australia, whose cover she graces, noting:
“Here's a radical idea, Miranda - how about posing with your kit on for your next shoot?”

Miranda Kerr's mother once tried to sabotage her modelling career, her grandmother was initally "shocked" by her body of work

screen cap 60 minutes

The Australian edition of 60 Minutes ran a profile of Miranda Kerr on tonight's show. No Orlando Bloom, but Kerr's mother Therese, paternal grandmother Ann Kerr and Miranda's teacup Yorkshire terrier Frankie all made cameos - the latter cradled in her arms as she strolled along an LA beach esplanade with reporter Charles Woolley, who at one point copped a feel of unborn baby Bloom. Woolley broke bread with the Kerrs over lunch and in another scene, was guided by Miranda through a local health food shop. No mention of her more controversial recent fashion work, which includes considerable nudity and in one shoot for French magazine Numéro, dressing up in a Latex nun's outfit. But Woolley did ask Miranda at one point how she feels about earning more money than a cancer researcher, to which she responded, "It baffles me, what can I say?" - before adding that "modelling has given me a face", to which she hopes to add a voice and, words to the effect, use the power of her celebrity for good.

Kerr's mother and grandmother made a couple of interesting revelations.

Therese Kerr confessed that when her daughter first entered the Dolly modelling competition in 2007 at the age of 13, she deliberately included some unflattering photos of Miranda which showed her crooked teeth in the hope that it would sabotage her chances of selection. Miranda won regardless - and the teeth were later corrected by braces (although noone clarifies at what stage this happened, or whether or not Miranda's modelling income paid for the orthodontics). Therese's concerns had been fuelled, she told Woolley, by her "pre-conceived ideas about the industry..........I wanted to protect my daughter".

When Ann Kerr was asked for her initial reaction to the news that Miranda had scored a gig modelling skimpy lingerie for the Victoria's Secret giant, she responded that it came as "a shock". She told Woolley, "I nearly died.... [I thought] not my Miranda... But you’ve got to get used to it, if that’s the kind of work she does".

Ann Kerr also mentioned that she occasionally hears "raised voices" when in the vicinity of her granddaughter and Bloom (which, given their hectic schedules, presumably can't be that often). "But next minute they've got arms around each other", she added.
