Andrej Pejic wraps 2011 in a lingerie campaign for Hema

parool
It's Victoria's Secret all right. He closed Jean Paul Gaultier’s haute couture show in Paris as the traditional bride. He channelled Marilyn Monroe. He was presented to the Queen at Buckingham Palace. What other accomplishments could the androgynous, Bosnian-born, Melbourne-raised modelling superstar Andrej Pejic squeeze into the closing days of 2011? Try scoring an advertising campaign for womens’ lingerie. Behold two images from a new intimate apparel campaign from Dutch chain store Hema, advertising its “Mega Push-Up Bra”, as modelled by Pejic underneath two womens' dresses. Even in the super liberal Netherlands, Hema’s choice of model has made big news, with at least a half dozen Dutch news outlets picking up the story in the last few hours. The campaign was shot in Amsterdam in late September and is described as a "money job" by Pejic's Sydney agent, Chadwick's Joseph Tenni. "It's revolutionary" Tenni told frockwriter. "I've never known a man to do a womens' lingerie campaign before".

Bull market

tom bull by justin chung

Andrej Pejic is the undisputed king of Australian mens’ modelling right now – even if he’s rocking womenswear half of the time. Although yet to make the big dollars, in terms of profile, it’s impossible to ignore Pejic, with global news stories about him rolling out on almost a daily basis. He is currently the only Australian to make the models.com Top 50 Men list (#18). Others to catch the attention of the international fashion industry of late include Jordan Coulter, Jethro Cave, Frankie Eliss-Galatti, Broed Dillewaard and Jack Vanderhart - with indigenous Australian Jake Gordon recently popping up at a few New York Fashion Week shows. So far no other Australian men have matched the track record of Heath Townsend, now in his 30s and a David Jones ambassador, but an erstwhile advertising face of Louis Vuitton, Calvin Klein and Abercrombie & Fitch. But Tom Bull is making a pretty good start.

Scouted at 17 while playing football for Claremont in the West Australian Football League, the now 22 year-old Perth native, who holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Australia, headed to New York earlier this year to pursue modelling fulltime.

In the interim he has shot a Christmas 2011 holiday campaign for Banana Republic with Carter Smith; the Spring/Summer 2012 Perry Ellis campaign with Rocco Laspata (opening and closing the SS12 Perry Ellis show at New York Fashion Week) and just last Friday, the SS12 Ralph Lauren Purple Label campaign with Sheila Metzner. Having his own New York Fashion Week video diary on The New York Times' The Moment, shot by New Zealand blogger mate Isaac Hindin Miller, probably didn't hurt his profile.

Bull's rugged looks are of course the absolute antithesis of Pejic's feminine features (which we hear ruffled the feathers of one big name female model on a recent photoshoot in New York. Pejic, who was styled up in matching womenswear, made her "look fat" she claimed). Check Bull's portfolio at The Agency Models for a better look at his pretty incredible physique. Good to see that fashion has room for both.

Blowout at Buckingham Palace

antipodium's facebook
So Buckingham Palace's Australian reception is done and dusted. Three hundred and fifty guests descended on the palace last night for a special meet-and-greet with Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, ahead of next week's royal visit downunder. So far there don't seem to be terribly many photos of Andrej Pejic. But Antipodium designer Geoffrey J Finch snapped these two shots of Pejic en route to the do in a rather demure black vintage Versace pencil skirt and charcoal grey Paul Smith blazer (and not Jean Paul Gaultier, a rack of whose clothes, we hear, had been sent to Pejic prior to the event). Teamed with, Pejic tells frockwriter, an Issey Miyake blouse, black tights, boots from Australian high street chain Tony Bianco and his mum's vintage gold belt from the 1980s, the most extravagant aspect of the outfit was his coiffure: dead straight blond hair extensions which reached to his waist - the antithesis of his Bellatrix L'Estrange-meets-Marie-Antoinette up do at Myer's recent relaunch party. In the absence so far of any photographic evidence, did Pejic actually get to meet the Queen or did he just mill about the reception rooms while a select few were run past Her Majesty? "All the guests who attended last night's reception were presented to The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh" a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told us.

antipodium's facebook

It is highly likely that Pejic and Australian singer-songwriter Gabriella Cilmi, both just turned 20, were the youngest invitees.

Also in attendance were Finch, Collette Dinnigan, Yasmin Sewell, Jason Donovan, Hugh Jackman, chef Bill Granger, who assisted the royal kitchens in the preparation of lamingtons and pavlova (iconic Australian pastries) and Elle Macpherson, who curtseyed when meeting HM (see below) and looked equally demure in a nude silk cocktail dress and matching handbag and pumps.

Not quite so demure was Australian novelist Kathy Lette, who rocked up to the event with her husband, British QC Geoffrey Robertson - both staunch Republicans - in an outfit emblazoned with pictures of corgis wearing crowns.

The Queen was resplendent in what we are reliably informed was an eggplant silk cloque tailleur by British couturier Stewart Parvin.

Andrej Pejic and Geoffrey J Finch gear up for their hot date at Buckingham Palace

geoffrey j finch's facebook, juergen teller/photoshopped by frockwriter

Our recent post about Andrej Pejic heading off to meet the Queen at an upcoming Australian-themed reception at Buckingham Palace caused a minor stir. Although Pejic’s Australian agency Chadwick had initially confirmed Pejic would be attending this Thursday's soiree, faced with what we hear was a subsequent barrage of calls from the Australian mainstream media, the agency later played it a little coy, claiming Pejic “had not decided if he would make it to London”. Yeah, right. This morning, we spoke with fellow Buck Palace invitee, Pejic’s London-based Australian designer mate Geoffrey J Finch, who tells frockwriter the pair plans to head to the soiree together. “I couldn’t think of a better date to go with” said Finch, who was the first to put Pejic on a runway in womenswear way back in May 2009 in Sydney, when Pejic opened Finch’s Antipodium show at Australian Fashion Week. Finch is suiting up for the royal occasion in a double-breasted charcoal Burberry. Is he at all concerned that his date might turn up channeling Princess Diana? “It would be quite incredible, I’d love to see him in a little pleated collar” he noted. So far, however, we gather Pejic has been mulling over a rack of Jean Paul Gaultier. “I can’t wait to see what he pulls out of the bag” says Finch. UPDATE 14/10: Blowout at Buckingham Palace.

Pejic, Finch and, as previously reported, London-based retailer Yasmin Sewell are not the only Australians to receive an invitation. A Buckingham Palace spokeperson has just confirmed that both Elle Macpherson and Collette Dinnigan (a new fave of the Duchess of Cambridge) will also be attending.

Finch arrived in Sydney over the weekend to attend to sales of his Spring/Summer 2012 collection which was just unveiled at London Fashion Week. Originally planning to be back in Australia for two weeks, he is cutting the visit short to leave for London on Tuesday afternoon.

“You can’t really say no to Her Majesty” says Finch, who reports that guests have been asked to arrive at the Palace half an hour earlier than the event, which is due to start at 6.00pm. Following his RSVP, he adds, he received a black and white “GP” sticker to put on his taxi, so it can enter the palace, in addition to a small document that he describes as an HM “FAQ”. He notes, “Things such as ‘If anyone should want to write a letter to thank the Queen, this is not necessary, but if you do all letters will be seen by Her Majesty'. It doesn’t have anything on how you should address her”.

This is possibly because the Palace presumes all in attendance have seen The Queen and The King's Speech and have the "It's Ma’am as in ham, not Ma’am as in farm" protocol down pat.

What will Andrej Pejic wear to meet the Queen?

love cat magazine via milk made

Earlier this month, Sydney-based PR agency Under The Wing Tweeted an invitation that its client Geoffrey Finch had received from The Master of the Household of Buckingham Palace (see below) for a special Australian-themed reception on Thursday October 13th - six days ahead of the kickoff of Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Australia. The London-based Australian expat is one of several hundred guests who are expected to descend on the Palace that evening and, as it emerges, one of at least three Australian fashion industry representatives. London-based retailer Yasmin Sewell has, we understand, also received a bait, as has gender-bending pop culture phenom Andrej Pejic. Although Buckingham Palace would not provide any further details about either the guest list or RSVPs when we checked overnight, Pejic's Australian agency Chadwick confirms that he will definitely be attending. The big question, of course, is just what will Pejic wear for such an occasion? UPDATE 14/10: A demure little black dress and waist-length hair extensions is the answer.

under the wing PR's twitter
Over the past year we have grown accustomed to expecting the unexpected from Pejic. This is the man who closed Jean Paul Gaultier's haute couture show in Paris in January in a wedding dress, turned up at Rio airport with a fake baby bump, channeled Harry Potter's Bellatrix L'Estrange for Myer's relaunch and, more recently, Marilyn Monroe for Love Cat magazine, amongst myriad other fashion assignments for which he has keen kitted out by stylists and designers as alternatively, a man and a woman.

christos karantzolas for schon magazine via haus of andrej pejic

Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements thinks Pejic should wear "a three piece suit and a drop earring to meet the Queen. A bit Bowie" - apparently overlooking the fact that Bowie himself never needed to think about dressing to meet the Queen, as he refused both a CBE and a Knighthood. As for the world's most famous drag queen, the late Danny La Rue, he graciously accepted his OBE in 2002.... in a suit and top hat.

So is there any specific protocol that would preclude Pejic rocking up to the Palace in a frock if that's how he chose to roll on the day?

Not according to Buckingham Palace press officer Marnie Gaffney, an Australian who has worked with The Queen for the past three years  - and who did, to our delight, in fact drop the term "The Presence" during our phone conversation, when we asked just how much time she spends with HRH.

After stifling a giggle on the Pejic dress question, Gaffney told frockwriter, “The recommended dress code for receptions at Buckingham Palace is Day Dress/Lounge Suit. However, this is for guidance only and guests are welcome to wear whatever they feel comfortable in.”

Andrej Pejic channels Marilyn Monroe

screen cap 'norman jean'
It was only a matter of time. After making fashion history in January in Paris by closing Jean Paul Gaultier's haute couture presentation as the traditional bride and thence gussied up for a gazillion photoshoots and indie videos, someone finally got fashion's favourite cross-dresser, Andrej Pejic, to do a Marilyn - Monroe that is. Called, hilariously, Norman Jean, this video was commissioned by Milk Made, the online editorial arm of New York's Milk Studios, from Love Cat magazine's Prince Chenoa and Jacob Dekat, working in tandem with filmmaker Jenna Elizabeth. Styling is courtesy Sex and The City costumier Patricia Field. It depicts bare-chested Pejic in a blonde wig and corset, chanelling Monroe during one of her most iconic moments: singing 'Happy Birthday, Mr President' to John F Kennedy at Madison Square Garden in May 1962, three months before her death.

What does Andrej Pejic have to do to make the cover of Vogue Australia?

gazelle paulo/freak chic

Andrej Pejic’s first modelling job was a cover shoot – for Oyster’s 77th edition, back in 2008, flanked by a phalanx of male and female models. And while many cover tries never make it to page one, one of Pejic’s Oyster shots did, together with two of the women. It’s fair to say, however, that very few in the Australian industry knew who he was at this time and he was by no means the sole focus of the story. Fast track to August 2011 and Pejic has appeared on no less than eight international magazine covers in the space of six months: Zeit Magazin (February), Photo (March), Dossier Journal (Spring 2011), Citizen K (Spring 2011), Carbon Copy (Spring 2011), L’Officiel Ukraine (June 2011), Follow #5 and just this week, the very high-profile New York magazine, as one of four covers of the magazine’s Fall 2011 fashion special. Here is a photo gallery of all nine covers (best viewed on the blog):

WordPress plugin

Debuting on models.com's Top 50 Men list at #40 in December, little wonder Pejic is now ranked the world number #19

So why haven’t Australian magazines been clamouring to get him on a cover back home? What an amazing coup it would be for Vogue Australia, for example, to be the first mainstream womens' fashion magazine in the world to do so, if only editor Kirstie Clements had the balls.

Given that even Miranda Kerr didn’t make it to the cover of Vogue Australia until January this year – until after she had appeared on the covers of both Spanish and Italian Vogue, had married Orlando Bloom and was pregnant – frockwriter thinks there’s little chance of that happening.

Speaking of pregnancies, one of the more amusing anecdotes recounted in the  accompanying Pejic feature in this month's New York magazine was how Pejic attempted a little supermodel satire when arriving at Sao Paulo airport in June this year, for Sao Paolo Fashion Week.

Inspired by the miraculous maternity bounce-backs of supermods such as Kerr, who somehow manage to head back to work mere weeks after giving birth, Pejic had hoped to demonstrate he could do it in a day: arriving in Sao Paulo with a styrofoam baby bump, which he planned to jettison for the following day’s runway duties.

Pejic’s plan was foiled by Brazilian customs which asked him to remove the object, assuming he might be smuggling contraband.

Once given the all clear, Pejic was reunited with his faux baby bump – and paraded it landside in this photo and video (above/below):

Three is a magic number (maybe)

leoni milano

Happy Independence Day to my American readers. July 4 is also frockwriter’s birthday and today we turn three. How time flies. It seems like only yesterday that I was saying sayonara to mainstream media blogging (for smh.com.au and news.com.au) and venturing into the wild blue yonder of the indie blogosphere. What a ride it has been. And what can I say but, once again, thank you for your interest, your comments, your Tweets, your links, your trackbacks, your feedback and your shit-canning. Over exuberance of the latter at one point over the past year prompted me to finally upgrade my comments system. Couple of milestones. It took two years to reach one million page views. But just one to reach two million. What might it take to hit one million PIs per month? Certainly much more of an effort than currently goes into this blog, due to paid work commitments and other distractions (such as a family drama, which has occupied a huge amount of time over the past few months). But I’m working on it. Thanks to new advertising partner Pages Digital, the first ad campaigns have gone up. Early days of course. But baby steps.

Thanks to Kent for his unwavering support. Thanks also to my mates. You know who you are.

Special thanks to the inimitable Andrej Pejic, the subject of frockwriter’s two most popular posts of the last twelve months (not to mention an in-depth current affairs profile on Seven Network’s Sunday Night program). The year’s other top posts included Pretty Babies, about the eight year-old stars of an editorial in the December edition of Vogue Paris - a post that attracted the attention of the US Christian Right and broke frockwriter’s comments record. Coincidentally, it also precipitated, by several days, the announcement of the departure of Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld. Bulgari’s Lolcats and Givenchy’s Gender Bender (about transsexual model Lea T) were other popular posts.

Thanks to all the photographers, designers, editors, PRs and model agents for their generosity with tips, info, access and notably first looks at images, covers and campaigns - and of course the models themselves, who occupy such a huge part of this blog.

Thank-you also to the other bloggers, journalists and media outlets which regularly pick up frockwriter's stories. So very much appreciated.

Mother and son

So Myer celebrated its 100th birthday, simultaneously unveiling the A$300million Bourke Street flagship store revamp, with a million dollar party last night. Arguably the biggest star of the night was Melbourne modelling sensation Andrej Pejic accompanied by his proud mum Jadranka Savic, who looked beautiful in a custom-made black Grecian-style gown by Jane Lamerton. Kitted out in embellished gold trousers and tuxedo jacket by Yeojin Bae and towering black platform boots, Pejic's extravagant up-do was inspired, he told The Melbourne Herald Sun, by Helena Bonham Carter's character Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Noted Pejic, "I watched it on the plane and I'm like, that's the hair that I want".

Andrejmania

holly blake for michael wolff

Are you ready for the seven days of Andrej? In his first visit back home downunder since his already burgeoning media profile went into overdrive, thanks to several rather groundbreaking turns on Jean Paul Gaultier’s runways in Paris in January, Serbian Australian modelling superstar Andrej Pejic touched down in Melbourne this morning for what frockwriter understands is a very busy week. We hear today is in fact his only free day. Pejic is in town for Thursday night’s big unveiling of the revamped Bourke Street, Melbourne flagship of Australian department store Myer. In and around that event, one rehearsal, one in-store photocall on Wednesday at 11.45am – not exactly a press conference, but the next best thing – and at least two photoshoots have been squeezed. One of the photoshoots is for an Australian eveningwear label – a womens eveningwear label, just to clarify. And Pejic will of course be catching up with his family, who were first profiled on Seven Network’s Sunday Night program on February 13th

Joining Pejic on the red carpet on Thursday will be his charming mother Jadranka, who has been outfitted for the occasion by designer Jane Lamerton. We attended last week’s fittings for Jadranka’s custom-made dress and took a few shots:

Pejic himself will reportedly be wearing a mashup of Arthur Galan and Yeojin Bae.

It’s unclear at this stage whether their red carpet sortie will be the only appearance that the Pejics make at the event.

Since we last covered Pejic’s skyrocketing career, after the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 show season, during which he walked for twelve different designers - half in menswear and half in womenswear - Pejic has been working flat out and the global publicity has not stopped. Little wonder he is edging closer to the world Top 10 of models.com’s Top 50 Men list, having just moved into the number 11 spot.

Notable jobs have included two magazine covers (Zeit Magazin and Photo), a photoshoot for Dazed & Confused and at least three videos: for Dossier Journal, Crash magazine and emerging talent website The Ones 2 Watch.

Just how to leverage this unprecedented interest into serious earnings... that’s the $64million question.

A big bucks Myer campaign? Too edgy for a mainstream retailer with a very conservative advertising image, say our sources – in spite of the fact that Myer is so keen to associate itself with Pejic this week.

Beauty contracts are where the big money lies in modelling. You have to wonder just how long it will be before a major name snaps Pejic up. Jean Paul Gaultier perhaps, for one of his fragrances?

So far, two small Australian companies have been the only beauty advertisers to step up to the Pejic plate. The Fudge hair product brand and, most recently, Sydney hair stylist Michael Wolff

Wolff's ad, shot by Sydney photographer Holly Blake, featured in a recent edition of Harpers Bazaar Australia:

Wolff told frockwriter:

“I was looking and casting girls and I couldn’t really find the girl. The reference I was using was the story that Andrej did in French Vogue. And Holly Blake said ‘You know this guy is Australian don't you?' We spent a day with him, back in December, he was on his way to Paris. Whilst he was here, I coloured and cut his hair and the next day I shot with him. I have a good friend called Christopher Esber and I borrowed a shirt, a double shirt with cotton and rubber over the top. That was the hero shot I used for the ad.

”At the end of the day, I loved Andrej’s look so much, the whole androgynous thing… it elevated the whole image of the salon. It’s kind of like stepping into the moment. Does it matter if it’s a man or a woman? So many guys have long hair. People appreciate beautiful people. To me Andrej had the most perfect face.

”It’s what’s now. This is what’s happening now. I see lots of young people walking around and I think they’re quite androgynous. It’s not about sexuality, about being gay or straight. There’s a whole new thing going on now, so having the opportunity to shoot Andrej was very cool”.

Here are some hitherto unseen outtakes from the Michael Wolff shoot, which we just couldn't resist turning into a little flash animation....

Juliana Forge often gets compared to Abbey Lee Kershaw

Tuesday's Kookai show looked like a million dollars thanks to a great cast headed up by the brand's current advertising face in Australia, Juliana Forge. Nineteen year-old Forge could be the next antipodian to clean up at the international show circuit, once she finally makes a serious move offshore. She has just returned from a shoot for Greek Vogue which could be a harbinger of big things to come. Here is a quick iv frockwriter grabbed with Forge backstage before the show, in which she mentions that people frequently bring up her resemblance to fellow Melburnite Abbey Lee Kershaw, now the world number five model.

Frockwriter: You recently shot Greek Vogue?
Juliana Forge: Yes, I just shot that in Athens, two weeks ago. It's coming out next month or the month after, I can't remember. Amazing pieces. We shot it next to a private plane. We were at an airport actually, freezing cold weather. The whole travel idea... very glamorous, beautiful colours.

FW: When might we be seeing Juliana Forge at the international shows?
JF: Potentially later this year, but it may be something that happens next year.

FW: Do people often comment that you look like Abbey Lee Kershaw?
JF: Yes, I do sometimes get compared to Abbey. I take that as a huge compliment.

FW: Abbey Junior?
JF: Or Abbey's little sister [laughs]. I think [people think] we have quite similar eyes. I think some of our features are similar. Not that I see the similarity, but it does come up.

FW: If you are by any chance planning to dye your hair platinum blonde, that might confuse things.
JF: Imagine.

FW: What do you think about the success Australian models are currently enjoying internationally?

JF: I think they're doing incredibly. It's amazing that so many girls did so well at the shows.

FW: And not just the girls. You mentioned that you once did a shoot with Andrej Pejic - and didn't realise he wasn't a woman until after the shoot.
JF: It was for the Herald Sun. It was a bit of a shock when the article came out and I realised it was a guy. He does look really feminine.

Gumleaf runway mafia

So another ready-to-wear season bites the dust. Below are, to the best of frockwriter's knowledge, the final show tallies for Australian models on the Fall/Winter 2011/2012 runways. All 27 of them. As already mentioned, at least 18 Australians walked at New York Fashion Week last month, with others joining the circuit in London and Milan. And what a fascinating season it has been. A very clear vanguard of five names emerged. No surprise of course that even though she missed the New York leg, Abbey Lee Kershaw walked in 24 of the season's biggest shows. In her third show season, Julia Nobis, who did the entire circuit, wound up with 50 top shows under her belt. Not far behind her were Dempsey Stewart and Codie Young, in their first international seasons, with an impressive 42 and 39 shows respectively. Ajak Deng walked in 25 shows.

Behind them, a slew of other Australian models scoring a smaller volume of nevertheless highly prestigious shows, many of them under an exclusive arrangement: Miranda Kerr at Balenciaga; Jessica Hart at Matthew Williamson; Lydia Willemina Collins at Givenchy; Ruby Jean Wilson at Yves Saint Laurent (among others); Rose Smith at Fendi and Chanel; Jack Vanderhart at Calvin Klein Collection; Bambi Northwood-Blyth at Chanel (among others). Andrej Pejic continued to make headlines wherever he went and great to see Myf Shepherd make such a confident return, 18 months after her last show season.

On numerous occasions, designers cast multiple Australians in the same show - at times, amusingly, even dispatching them onto the runway in consecutive order.

Chanel cast five Australians (above: Kershaw, Nobis, Young, Stewart and Northwood-Blyth) and Giles Deacon, eight (below: Nobis, Deng, Young, Stewart, Wilson, Northwood-Blyth, Alice Burdeu and Lauren Brown). While Chloe, Dries van Noten and Marc Jacobs all cast Nobis, Stewart and Young.

Not forgetting the extraordinary success of New Zealand's Emily Baker - who walked in 60 shows in her first season, undoubtedly making her one of the top runway girls of FW1112 - and Jessica Clarke, the talent continues to rise from downunder.

"Clearly the modeling industry has fixated on Australia and New Zealand as an
incredible new source for emerging faces" Wayne Sterling, the co-founder and editorial director of online modelling authority models.com - the so-called 'NASDAQ of the modelling business' - told frockwriter. "The results of great scouting speak for themselves and now Down Under stands as a Top 3 scouting resource alongside Holland and Russia".
